« Green Polymers »

Abstract

"Polymer Education in Algeria"

Abstract

The driving force behind the development of  “Polymer Education” was a very ambitious industrial project called “Projet Plastiques” initiated in the early 1970’s. Such a project aimed to make Algeria the first plastics producer in Africa, and, for that purpose, the E.N.P.C. (Entreprise Nationale des Plastiques et Caoutchoucs) was created (in 197?) with headquarters in SETIF, city that became the “Plastics Capital” later on. This new industrial sector needed qualified personnel and higher education institutions were then asked to engage in programs in Polymer Engineering and Science (Baccalaureate +3 and +5 degrees.)

The Algerian Institute of Petroleum (IAP) in Boumerdes was the first institution to engage in this program, with the cooperation of the Plastics Institute of America,, followed by the National Polytechnics School (ENP- Alger) in 1973. Today several Institutes/universities offer L/M/D. degrees in Macromolecular Science/Polymer Engineering, the leading one being the Department of Process Engineering, the only institution that offers the three types of degrees through a national program in “Polymer Engineering” and “Polymeric Materials”.

"Polymer nanostructuring by the cold Plasma technic"

Abstract

The mechanisms involved in plasma polymerization are examined through the aniline monomer. The results show a great dependence of film chemistry on plasma parameters such as discharge power and the continuous or pulsed plasma mode. The plasma technique allows also elaborating structured polymer surfaces. The process we have developed consisting to gradually decrease the input power during deposition is described.

« Functional Polymeric Materials: Synthesis and characterisation»

Abstract

Functional polymer materials, by volume produced, represent a negligible part of the polymer industry. However, these polymers have become indispensable in many fields, most notably electronics, energy, informatics and medicine. There are many types, and only some of them (dendritic polymers, self-healing polymers, pH-responsive polymers and nanocomposites)  are briefly presented.

Keywords: Functional polymers, nanocomposites, smart polymers

« What do polymers nucleate on? Some unsettled issue in semi crystalline polymer nucleation"

Abstract

This work presents some fundamental studies on heterogeneous nucleation in semicrystalline polymer. Some relevant systems in which heterogenous nucleation is of importance, such as those of polymer-fiber composites or in additivated polymers are considered. It is shown that menaingful information on the nucleating activity of the substrate can only be gained if the related free energy barrier for nucleation is computed. In order to do so, nucleation kinetics data are mandatory, even if this is often neglected in the literature. For the explored systems, the free energy barrier approach allowed us to investigate the role of surface topography in fiber-induced polymer nucleation and to rationalize the empirical efficiency scale of  heterogeneous nucleating agents for i-PP.

Mots clés: semicrystalline polymers ; heterogeneous nucleation ; fiber-polymer composite ; nucleating agents
